I believe that the Philippines is ideal for producing quality animation and film effects with half the budget. There will be a timeline for the business development. It seems their portfolio of work spans slightly further than that of Pixar. They boast a range of films, video games, and television programming, where as Pixar now just focus on producing features films.

DreamWorks began as an idea in the early 90’s but became a reality for the creators in 1994. The three creators Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen were not to know they had just stumbled upon a multi billion pound 3D animation company, and over 15 years later, they are still going strong.

Whilst this was a company developed by a small range of individuals, they all chose to go their separate ways. In 2005 the company got an offer they could not refuse from Viacom, and the deal was eventually completed by 2006. Just two years later and DreamWorks were on a mission, they made a huge announcement that their partnership, that had been cherished for so long, would be coming to an end. They signed a .5 billion deal which would mean they’d be working in conjunction with India’s Reliance ADA Group producing films.

The DreamWorks animation sector of the business became so big that in 2004 it was eventually developed into a public company, working from two studios!

As far as their success goes, it shows similar dominance to that of Pixar. DreamWorks has managed to develop 10 outstanding films. Each of these has been box office hits, with revenue figures well in excess of 0 million. Of course, there is always a film that stands out from the crowd, or that makes a company what it is today and for DreamWorks, that was Shrek 2. This was their most popular film to date.

It’s obvious the film industry has changed significantly in the past decade. Recent innovations like the trend to shoot Digital Video instead of film and the progression of CGI has opened new worlds of possibility for the independent filmmaker. Very few individuals could afford to make high quality films 10 – 15 years ago, but that’s all changed. Creative auteurs can now produce quality movies and videos from the convenience of their very own homes using equipment that’s affordable. And now, with vehicles to show the world their work like YouTube and other similar sites, everything from pre-production to distribution can be done from the filmmaker’s bedroom.

Here’s what you need to set up your own multimedia editing bay in a spare room:

You’ll also need to download the software that allows you to edit. Media Studio Pro 6.5 is accepted as industry standard, although there are others that do the same thing. The software will then allow you to manipulate the footage and begin editing.

Once you have all of this, you’ll be able to create your masterpiece. But then what? While it’s possible to upload the completed video online, you should consider in advance if you’re going to want to put it on DVD and make multiple copies of those DVDs. If so, you’ll need one last piece of equipment: a DVD burner or a CD burner if you plan to make CD-Roms.

Things have come a long way since “Walking with Dinosaurs”. 3d animation, motion graphics, CGI and visual effects are now a regular part of many documentary films. As well as historical reconstructions and informational motion graphics, computer animation and CGI is now routinely used in almost any situation where shot footage isn’t available.

What’s more, costs have come down and quality of visual effects has gone up in recent years, so even a documentary film with a modest budget can now afford to use compelling and stylish computer graphic animations.

But as a documentary filmmaker, how do you go about adding visual effects and 3d animation to your productions?

Motion graphics and animation tips

Don’t be afraid to approach a video animation design or visual effects artist early on in your production. They’ll be able to let you know immediately what’s possible and how to get your animation done in the most effective way.

Give your animators as much detail as you’ve got -. 3d animation studios are used to doing research, but if you can give them access to your research, experts or helpful interviewees, you’ll get a much more unified view of the subject.

Use animation shots that tell a story: animated sequences and visual effects shots tend to be some of the more expensive shots in your production, so choose them well. Visual effects reconstructions: animated reconstructions are often the “hero” shots of a documentary. If you don’t have the footage of the most important events or moments in your documentary film, an animated reconstruction is often the way to go.

Title animations: An animated title sequence is a good way to open your documentary, and it will set the tone for your entire documentary film, so it’s worth dedicating a little time to making sure that tone is spot on for the style and content of what comes after.

How to reduce your documentary film’s motion graphics costs
The quickest way to reduce cost is to talk to the 3d animator or visual effects studio about how the production can be simplified without affecting its overall look. For example, to animate a camera flying through a static model takes a lot less time (possibly weeks less) than animating every detail of the model itself.
